Becoming Politically and Spiritually Savvy

This author knows his stuff. He presents the plan and shows how effective the movement is during this age of materialism and humanistic thinking. Profound.

Funnier than anything!

This is an author that makes those Jack Chick comics seem sane and lucid. There is not one cultural icon that escapes unscathed from Marr's psychotic paranoia.
From Rainbow Brite to the Smurfs, popular culture is creating a Satan worshipping cult of New Age values. Every chapter begins with a nasty story that may or may not be true (3rd grade satan worshippers hitting their playmates with rocks, etc.) and then turns around and says that it is the media that is causing it all.
Beautifully written, poetic, and scary on two fronts. One being that Marr takes himself seriously and second being that in the author bio, it states that someone hired this yahoo as a professor.

Paranoia, thy name is Texe.
By A Customer
With his flair for conspiracy mongering, this guy could link Mother Teresa to the Mafia. He sees a dark motive behind every imaginable product, corporation, and person. For instance, the Lucent technology from Bell Labs is from Satan! How does Texe come up with this? Simple. The logo is a circle of flame. "Lucent" is very similar to "Lucifer," and Lucifer masquerades as an angel of light (thus the fiery ring.) Well, Texe, one out of three is not a passing grade (the Bible does say that Satan can pose as an angel of light...) If you want to become distrustful of everybody and every thing you come in contact with, read Texe. If not, remember, Women are from Venus, but Texe is from Marrs.

'The author has skilfully put together all the main aspects of negotiation: both the principles and the practice in one book. Here we have a comprehensive treatment and coverage of negotiation all in one place, grounded in the relevant research on negotiation.' - Joo Seng Tan, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore 'Most negotiation books are either too scholarly or too prescriptive - this textbook bridges that gap. It provides a solid grounding in academic research at an appropriate level while also providing practical advice. I would use this textbook with both postgraduate and executive audiences.' -Connson Locke, London School of Economics 'This book provides a perfect balance between core principles of international negotiation and their application in practice. The book is authoritative but accessible. It is comprehensive and covers with sufficient level of detail the most common elements of international negotiation (and some not so common!). It also contains the right combination of 'hard' (commercial) and 'soft' (people-related) issues. A must read for anyone involved in overseas trade, international relations and global customer management. A core text for negotiation modules in business and management studies.' - Javier Marcos-Cuevas, Cranfield University, UK 'A very well written work on this important topic with lots of relevant examples, case studies, student exercises and summaries of key points. International Business Negotiation was fantastic
By Exploremeister
This book has a great combination of case studies and technical detail. As a business owner in Northern Africa, travelling through various parts of the continent and over to Europe occasionally, I have been increasingly inspired to perfect my business negotiation skills after each chapter. It's not easy to run a business, especially one where trade is done cross-border, but using a lot of the techniques I learned in Maude's latest work I've become a better businessman and a better person!

City Squares: Eighteen Writers on the Spirit and Significance of Squares Around the World, by Catie Marron

In this important collection, eighteen renowned writers, including David Remnick, Zadie Smith, Rebecca Skloot, Rory Stewart, and Adam Gopnik evoke the spirit and history of some of the world’s most recognized and significant city squares, accompanied by illustrations from equally distinguished photographers.

Over half of the world’s citizens now live in cities, and this number is rapidly growing. At the heart of these municipalities is the square—the defining urban public space since the dawn of democracy in Ancient Greece. Each square stands for a larger theme in history: cultural, geopolitical, anthropological, or architectural, and each of the eighteen luminary writers has contributed his or her own innate talent, prodigious research, and local knowledge.

Divided into three parts: Culture, Geopolitics, History, headlined by Michael Kimmelman, David Remnick, and George Packer, this significant anthology shows the city square in new light. Jehane Noujaim, award-winning filmmaker, takes the reader through her return to Tahrir Square during the 2011 protest; Rory Stewart, diplomat and author, chronicles a square in Kabul which has come and gone several times over five centuries; Ari Shavit describes the dramatic changes of central Tel Aviv’s Rabin Square; Rick Stengel, editor, author, and journalist, recounts the power of Mandela’s choice of the Grand Parade, Cape Town, a huge market square to speak to the world right after his release from twenty-seven years in prison; while award-winning journalist Gillian Tett explores the concept of the virtual square in the age of social media.

This collection is an important lesson in history, a portrait of the world we live in today, as well as an exercise in thinking about the future. Evocative and compelling, City Squares will change the way you walk through a city.

Contributors include:

David Adjaye on Jemma e-Fnna, Marrakech • Anne Applebaum on Red Square, Moscow and Grand Market Square, Krakow • Chrystia Freeland on Euromaiden, Kiev • Adam Gopnik on Place des Vosges, Paris • Alma Guillermoprieto on Zocalo, Mexico City • Jehane Noujaim on Tahrir Square, Cairo • Evan Osnos on Tiananmen Square, Beijing • Andrew Roberts on Residential Squares, London • Elif Shafak on Taksim Square, Istanbul • Rebecca Skloot on American Town Squares • Ari Shavit on Rabin Square, Tel Aviv • Zadie Smith on the grand piazzas of Rome and Venice • Richard Stengel on Market Square, Grand Parade, Cape Town • Rory Stewart on Murad Khane, Kabul • Plus contributions by Gillian Tett, George Packer, David Remnick, and Michael Kimmelman; illustrations and photographs from renowned photographers, including: Thomas Struth, Philip Lorca di Corcia, and Josef Koudelka

From the Back Cover

In this important collection, eighteen renowned writers—including Zadie Smith, New Yorker editor David Remnick, and New York Times bestselling author Ari Shavit—evoke the spirit of city squares around the world, in original essays enhanced by more than ninety stunning color photographs.

Over half of the world’s citizens now live in cities, and the number is growing. At the heart of these municipalities is the city square, the defining urban public space since the dawn of democracy in ancient Greece. Divided into three sections, focusing on culture, geopolitics, and history, and each introduced by incisive cultural observers—New York Times architecture critic Michael Kimmelman, David Remnick, and National Book Award winner George Packer—the essays in City Squares visit very different landmarks on four continents.

Some contributors have personal connections to the public spaces featured in their pieces: Paris’s Place des Vosges figures into Adam Gopnik’s own history as well as that of France, just as Rome’s piazzas are central to Zadie Smith’s recollection of her time in Italy. Others recognize sites of major import: Pulitzer Prize winner Anne Applebaum contrasts two Cold War–era landmarks, Moscow’s Red Square and Krakow’s Grand Market Square; while Evan Osnos reflects on the symbolic power of Beijing’s Tiananmen Square. But whether intimate or global in scope, each essay showcases its author’s prodigious research, local knowledge, and distinctive voice.

Accompanied by vibrant images from distinguished photographers such as Massimo Vitali and Philip-Lorca diCorcia, City Squares is a lesson in history, a portrait of our world today, and an exercise in thinking about the future. The rich history of London’s residential squares; a visit to Cairo’s Tahrir Square at the height of the Arab Spring; abandoning the physical altogether to investigate the concept of the virtual square: All are contemplations of the essential roles these sites play in global life.

Evocative, timely, and thought-provoking, City Squares explores ideas of identity, community, and memory. Here is a magisterial work that will change the way you look at a city.

Advance Praise for City Squares

“Public spaces are among the magical achievements of the human landscape. Entirely artificial, they make cities communities. They create a place where people are encouraged to gather, talk, eat, pray, govern, and mourn—together. They change the character of cities and thus of civilizations. Catie Marron has done a splendid job of bringing together some of the smartest voices to reflect on some of the most beautiful or important or intriguing public spaces in the world. The result is itself magical.”—Fareed Zakaria, author of In Defense of a Liberal Education

“City Squares is a beautiful and haunting collection of essays by some of the finest writers of today. Each chapter is a jewel in itself. Taken together, however, these essays demonstrate the endurance of the human spirit in the spaces and squares of public life. It can never be fully extinguished—even in the face of guns, tanks, and bulldozers.”—Dr. Amanda Foreman, historian and author of Georgiana: Duchess of Devonshire and A World on Fire

“Savor many of the world’s most important writers on many of the world’s most important places—city squares that incubate and animate democracy, culture, and the human spirit. I love learning about how the personal stories of writers I admire intersect with history and urban life.”—Jonathan Alter, journalist and New York Times bestselling author

“Catie Marron’s City Squares is a revelation. It takes you on an incredible journey across the world’s greatest cities and their squares through the eyes of the best writers and thinkers. With every turn of the page, you will learn something new.”—Richard Florida, Global Research Professor at New York University and national bestselling author of The Rise of the Creative Class

Just as Catie Marron's City Parks changed the way we see urban green, City Squares changed the way I see my city, New York, and how I remember every city square I've ever visited around the world. This wonderful book! Traveling the world with eighteen brilliant writers, including Ann Beattie, Zadie Smith, Michael Kimmelman and Andrew Roberts would be value enough, but it's also the sense of their appreciation for and interest in the significance of squares everywhere that is so enriching. The eye must travel, and it does thanks to City Squares. Last but not least, the Financial Times' Gillian Tett writing on the virtual square: Hacker Square at the mighty Facebook headquarters in California is a must-read by anyone who has ever noticed that, yes, the Internet is real and ever-expanding and ever-changing the way we regard each other in this great experiment called life, in the 21st century.

Great book, but Kindle edition is awful
By SLPguy
First, this is a great book. It is well written and easy to read. Rhea Paul is just fantastic. My only negative about this book (and it is a big one) is that the Kindle edition is terrible. It uses location, not page numbers. The table of contents is vague (only gives the chapter, not the points within each chapter), meaning if you are looking for something, you have to start at the chapter and scroll through it to find what you want. I buy the kindle editions of books whenever I can because I like the speed at which I can find things. For this book, I had to buy the book edition as well. This was a waste of money. DO NOT BUY THE KINDLE EDITION.

Too Big and Too Much
By Gloria
I am disappointed in this text. First, it weighs a ton and is very awkward to hold for any length of time. Second, although Rhea Paul is obviously very knowledgable about her field, the material is not edited well. There is too much information presented in too broad a format. The book reads more like a survey of the literature rather than as a guide for beginning SLP students. Also, there are 76 pages of references but no glossary!

Horrible
By JClif
This book is very difficult to navigate and reads like an unedited encyclopedia. Sure, it has a lot of facts but what good when you can't find them?

A MUST READ! Outstanding accounts!
By Amazon Customer
This is a compilation of witnesses to Padre Pio's life. These stories of people who knew Padre Pio, who received healings and miracles and direction from Padre Pio, or who lived near him, or who worked with him, are truly superb and astounding. I thought I already knew all about him. If you have read a biography of his life, this is the NEXT PHASE!!! Though I have read everything I could find on him, I was still surprised when I read this book! Diane Allen has done an excellent and beautiful job of capturing the man as he was through the eyes of those who knew him. Awesome reading.
Padre Pio had a high regard for the American soldiers from WWII. Whenever one of them arrived to attend the Padre's Mass, they were ushered to the very front, much to their surprise. It was by the Padre's design. He loved Americans, and he thought they were very generous.

Although I love to read
By Mark Joseph
Although I love to read, I've been so busy that I don't have that much time to pick up a book lately!!! Relics of Saint Padre Pio had come to the church I attend in Los Angeles, California in Saint Peter and Saint Paul's Catholic Church. In the past I have attended the special mass and presentation about Saint Padre Pio which left me walking away very inspired. I have a particular patient in my pediatrics unit. These days, when I look at him I realize more and more that he himself in a miracle. When he was 5 years old the original diagnosis for him was that he was going to end up in a mental institution. In fact, it turns out that the doctor was truly incorrect. Fast forward to the future, that boy is now a 34 year old adult working within a sheltered organization. Reading Pray, Hope and Don't Worry, opened my mind and heart through all of the stories within in. The book is so well compiled, that I was able to read one story at a time. Before, I knew it, I was hooked on reading the entire book and had finished it. I highly recommend it to anyone who has, knows of or comes in contact with someone with any type of physical, emotional or mental disability. After reading his book, the reader will come away with a stronger faith and believe in miracles of the lord working through Padre Pio.

Pray, Hope and Don't Worry
By Christine Ramoutar
A deeply inspiring collection of true stories that gives insight into Padre Pio's humble, sanctified life as a stigmatist, which touched millions. The stories compel us to read over and over again how Padre Pio transformed people through their brief but powerful encounters with him. The accounts also reveal the essence of God Himself in this monastic priest, and serve as a balm to the soul that is shaken by worry and anxiety caused by daily trials. You cannot help but be inspired to pray much more, hope and trust in God and worry much less (or not at all).

This book is so well researched, comprehensive and beautifully written, that it offers something for everyone - even the non-believer. Padre Pio's simple, austere life as a priest and his gifts of the stigmata, countless miracles of healing and protection, bi-location and love of the Crucified Christ, all inspire belief in the absolute goodness and power of God. 'Pray, Hope and Don't Worry' is a must read for the world. The quest for faith stops here. I congratulate the author on this fine accomplishment.
