Shiv's story shifts back and forth in time so that readers are gradually informed about the tensions that emerged on that fateful vacation, the competition Shiv and Declan felt for the attentions of glamorous Nikos, their guide on a scuba diving expedition, and the lies Shiv told to maintain her relationship with Nikos while excluding Declan. No wonder she feels guilty. But she's not alone. Each of the young adults at the Korsakoff Clinic has suffered the traumatic loss of a loved one and each of them feels responsibility for the death. At first, the course of therapy seems relatively benign: walking, talking, and writing. The subsequent stages are much more brutal and are intended to break the patients psychologically in order to patch them together again. Heartbreaking Yet Hopeful

In Never Ending we meet Shiv, a teen who is overwhelmed by guilt over the death of her younger brother - a death she feels responsible for. She begins to act out - becoming more and more destructive and suffering blackouts where she simply can't remember her outbursts. Shiv comes to the Korsakoff Clinic for some very unorthodox treatment in an effort to deal with her guilt.

I don't usually read sad books - especially those that deal with the death of a child - however, I'm very glad I read this one. Shiv is an amazing character. She's so likeable, even in her grief, that I was there with her all the way. I loved that this wasn't one of those books where a kid is forced into some sort of treatment. The kids at the clinic want to be there. They want to come to grips with their guilt and the deaths of their loved ones.
Now, I should specify that I've never dealt with depression or any sort of psychiatric treatment, so I'm coming at this from the point of view of someone who hasn't had these experiences. However, the author really put me into the mind of his characters and I felt like I experienced everything along with them.
Ignorant as I am in the field of this sort of treatment, the specific techniques used in the fictional Korsakoff Clinic did seem a bit outrageous to me, but they were offset by riding with Shiv through her grief.
Now, I should add that the death of Declan was hard for me to deal with. Through a series of extremely well-written flashbacks, the author introduces us to Declan, making us love him, before finally showing us his death. And it's heartbreaking.
Yet, the book is incredibly hopeful as well. I won't give away the ending - I'll simply say that it ended very well.
If I had one nitpick with the book, I would say that I wanted to get to know some of the other residents of the Korsakoff clinic a little better. The only ones we get to know at all are Mikey and Caron. Every so often, the author would bring up the name of one of the other kids and I'd go blank a moment before remembering who they were.
All in all, an excellent Contemporary YA novel that deals with some hard issues, but handles them very well. Highly recommended!

Dark but amazing read

Never Ending is a well written and very engaging departure from most of the YA fiction put out in the last few years. Even though it does deal a bit with a love triangle, the author flips it on its ear. This is not a book about happy endings, dystopian futures, or a nobody being chosen by destiny to bring a land or kingdom or world together while learning how to use some amazing new power and finding the love of their life along the way.
Shiv is the main character of this story, and her's is a dark one. Her brother Declan is dead, and she feels responsible. Shiv cannot get over his death, cannot get over the guilt she feels for being alive. In an effort to help, she agrees to take part in a special, intensive program at an inpatient clinic. As Shiv progresses through the treatment, the details of what happened come out in flashbacks and ultimately we learn the truth of what happened that fateful day. The thing is, this clinic isn't all what it seems. Treatments can be rather unorthodox, and not every patient leaves in better condition than when they checked in.
Shiv's story is a sad, dark tale that will capture readers and take them, along with Shiv, to places in our minds we may not willingly want to go. Survivor's guilt is the bad guy in this story, not trolls or elves or other fantasy/supernatural/sci fi character. Shiv's battle is within herself, and her mind is what she's fighting for. Though this book is fiction, anyone that has ever lost someone close to them and wondered "why not me?" will relate to Shiv, her emotional turmoil, and the truth we must come to grips after losing a loved one.

Didn't like plot tease

Unless it's a straight mystery, I've lost my taste for stories that tease me with what's at the beginning of the story (but at the end of the book). In particular, I'm thinking of E. Lockhart's We Were Liars, which was frustrating and annoying. Never Ending performs the same tease, both in flashbacks while Shiv's brother Declan was alive in Greece and in the present while she's in an expensive clinic struggling to deal with her grief and guilt over his death.
Bedford is just a little too oblique about the mystery. Shiv is only fifteen; how responsible could she possibly be, especially when the therapy sessions aren't that deep? Then in the flashbacks, she's romanced by an older Greek lothario who's obviously a bit of a villain. It wasn't a surprise that Declan could die to advance the plot (although it would have been nice if the book were arranged in chronological order, it would have lost nothing but maybe gained more emotional growth for Shiv) but the actual "big" reveal was a letdown.
I couldn't help but skim to the end after that. I was bored because my reaction to Shiv's guilt at that point was, "why?" Bedford's writing is nice and while there were elements that were kind of iffy, if he'd have rearranged the order of things I still think I might have enjoyed this.
