The recipes are delicious and Gordon Ramsay is a genius.The book goes perfectly with the show (which also happens to be on youtube). You can watch the recipes being made while he teaches handy tips I've never seen before in the kitchen. Everything is simple and usually takes about 20 minutes to cook.

I have been a home cook for more than 40 years and have cooked recipes from every country, but The Ultimate Cookery Course had me rethinking my techniques and recipes less than an hour after receiving it. I have made Hollandaise sauce hundreds of times, but there it was... re-imagined with mint - for lamb, or grapefruit, or even oranges. I have a feeling that this will be my number one go-to book for reinventing my entire repertoire, for a long time to come.

Very good cookbook. Great recipes and tips...but measurements are all in Metrics.

Love the cookbook. I bought 4 of them, then we all discovered that ALL the ingredients are metric measurements. Now we have a group of older woman trying to learn the metric system. A metric conversion table included in the book would have been great. It takes a little longer to prepare when you have to do the conversions. Now we have learned to curse like Gordon!

About the Author
Kristen A.�Hite�teaches international environmental law and global administrative law classes at the Francis King Carey School of Law at the University of Maryland, USA and serves as senior advisor to Victori Tauli-Corpuz, the UN Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. She also leads a consulting practice for clients supporting public interest work on climate change, forests, and community rights. Her research focuses on international institutions and the role of social and environmental policies, tenure and human rights in pursuit of sustainable development. She has taught at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies as well as American University’s School of International Service, and has lectured extensively around the world in locations ranging from Pekanbaru, Indonesia, to World Bank headquarters in Washington, DC.

John L. Seitz�is Professor Emeritus of Government at Wofford College, USA. He earned a BA and MPA from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University, and a PhD in political science from the University of Wisconsin. He is a Member of Phi Beta Kappa and has extensive first-hand experience of South Korea, Iran, Brazil, Liberia, and Pakistan. Previous editions of this book, for which he was sole author, have been used around the world and have been translated into a number of languages, including Chinese, Japanese, and Portuguese.

Excellent one volume intro to how all the issues connect.

I used this book as text for high school "Global Studies" courses, and thought it was terrific in its understandable but not watered down treatment of the big issues -- war, hunger, women's rights, population, environment, etc. Shows how these issues relate to each other. It was a stretch for 9th graders, but would be perfect for high school seniors or college intro.

Representation of information is questionable

This book would have been much better if it stayed focused on the issues and facts. Instead the author decides to make frequent historical political comments based on his opinions, that have nothing to do with the issues. These breaks from analysis of the facts makes me question his ability to deliver unbiased information throughout the rest of the book.

Be aware of both sides

I enjoyed the first third of this book where Wilson discusses human evolution. I did not enjoy the second third where he went into great depth about eusociality in insects, although I realise this was included to provide a basis for the group vs kin selection argument in the third part. Without inclusion of the mathmatical modelling from the quoted nature paper I had no way of assessing the validity of Wilson's argument, which is a major change to evolutionary theory. But something did not ring true, I had found myself questioning his definitions and examples of sociality in the second section and when he started to write about cave painting his eurocentic views lead him astray from my understanding.
Doing some research I found that far from being widely accepted as the casual mention of the nature paper implies, this part of Wilsons work is very much still in question by evolutionary theorists. It is an important book to read but be aware that there is another side to the argument.

Not easy so far.

I have only read 18 chapters so I probably shouldn't review this book but so far I have learned (and immediately forgotten) an enormous amount of information about ants and bees. Maybe the author will relate the information to humans in the last 1/4 of the book. Or maybe ants will enjoy reading the research after humans die off from burning oil. Please find a review from someone who has read the complete book.

We are the conquerors, now what?

This book is a logical prelude to, and continuation of thoughts in "The Meaning of Human Existence". In this one, written in 2007, can be seen much of the detail leading to Wilson's concern about human eusociality and our tech threatened future. The two together constitute one very lucid argument about concern humans should have about earth's future. This book is much more detailed and therefore more difficult to simply summarize. Chapter titles are one means of understanding a close relationship between the two as an argument from science about life now and in future. Coincidentally I read the second first and vice versa but from page one the commonality of an underlying argument is very clear. Our 'first conquest of earth' was a unique 'event' in the past 4+ billion years of earth's existence. That little summary alone makes this book worth the read even if not followed by 'meaning of human existence'.
The problem with books of this sort is that they do not have a much, much broader reader appeal. To ultimately stimulate broad human concern, let alone action, the messages must be almost universally understood by the billions of human now on earth and the millions more to come perhaps sooner than for which humanity can usefully plan. Change portrayed in both books fits an exponential curve covering billions of years with an asymptote not far away from the present. Kurzweil and others suggest that to be in or around 2050 CE, about three decades from 2016.

Excellent but with some flaws

`The Archaeology of Greece' is an excellent book to introduce you to the numerous treasures the Greek world has left behind. Aside from plain information about the artefacts, the book also pays a lot of attention to the social background of the time. As the modern scope of archaeology lies mainly in explaining the past rather than just discovering pots and pans, this information is very welcome. Overall I find that Biers has done an excellent job in writing the book. His information is thorough and detailed and you never get the feeling that something is unclear. The illustrations are superb: you'll find a lot of nice pictures inside that are not just decoration but an essential part of the text.
Yet, I take one star off because the presentation of the book isn't always as good. First, there is very little `division' in each chapter. Each of the ten chapters has a division into art, architecture, sculpture, painting and mosaics and miscellaneous stuff. But it is not enough. For example, one of the chapters is about a few late-classical sculptors, among them Praxiteles, Skopas and Lysippos. All you see though, is one long batch of text under the header `sculpture'. Especially for students like me, it would be so much more helpful to divide `sculpture' into more parts and put more heads in the text, for example one with `Praxiteles' and one with `Lysippos', etcetera. Now it sometimes becomes unclear what the author is really talking about. Additionally, the author gives a lot of information about different sculptors and styles, but he seldom compares them. And IF he does, the lack of any heads makes the information very difficult to find.
Another strange thing was the connection between pictures and text. It often happens that the picture a text refers to, is one or two pages ahead of the text itself. So if page 167 refers to figure 9.25, you have to turn the page before you know what it is about. I think this problem could have been avoided easily with some better editing. Alas, the book has some typographical problems but on the level of information it's very useful and informative. I just hope these flaws will be removed in the next edition, but still recommend the book.

Good introduction and up-to-date scholarship

If you want a nice introduction to the archaeology of the Greek world, this book is a must. With up-to-date archaeological discoveries and theories, lovely pictures, and useful information on all subjects, one truly feels enlightened about the subject through reading this book. A must for all!
