Robert Rauschenberg is one of the most important visual artists of the second half of the twentieth century. In Random Order, Branden Joseph examines Rauschenberg's work in the context of the American neo-avant-garde. One of the foundations of his study is Rauschenberg's professional relationship with experimental composer John Cage. From the moment of their encounter at Black Mountain College in 1952, Joseph argues, Rauschenberg and Cage initiated a new avant-garde project, one that approached the idea of difference not in terms of negation but as a positive force. Claiming that Rauschenberg's work cannot be understood solely from the standpoint of the Frankfurt School -- whose theories have dominated discussions of avant-garde and neo-avant-garde aesthetics -- Joseph turns to the theoretical positions of Gilles Deleuze and Jacques Derrida. Rauschenberg's neo-avant-garde was not a simple repetition of earlier avant-garde movements, Joseph shows, but a series of practices that opposed the rise of postwar spectacle, commodification, and mass conformity.

Beginning with the White Paintings, Joseph examines Rauschenberg's artistic development from 1951 to 1971. He looks at the black paintings, Red Paintings, Elemental Paintings and Elemental Sculptures, Combines and Combine paintings, transfer drawings and silkscreens, performances, and explorations in art and technology. Indispensable

This study of Rauschenberg will doubtless make itself pretty much indispensable in the literature on the artist. It's a brilliant study- Joseph is in command of the literature on the topic, demonstrates a great deal of theoretical sophistication, as well as showing a lot of sensitivity to the works and their context.

Joseph's contention is to explore Rauschenberg's work in relation to the Neo-avant-garde, seeking to show that his work (along with his colleague John Cage) was neither a farcical repetition of 1920s Dada (ie jaded attempts to "shock" the viewer), nor was it an ironic casting-off of the avant-garde project in favour of a capitulation to commodity capitalism (ie through his pop culture references and so on). Instead, Joseph argues- convincingly- that Rauschenberg (and Cage) sought to escape the tyranny of the self- the "ego" of Absract Expressionism, in order to open up perception to differentiation and multiplicity- an attempt to open up a space beyond the totalised structures of late capitalism. (Joseph's concerns give away his being an ex-student of Benjamin Buchloh- hence these particularly Frankfurt School concerns). So for Joseph, Rauschenberg's White Paintings, or his Tire Print with John Cage, were not simply juvenile pranks, nor farcical, worn-out shock tactics, but serious attempts to disclocate habitual modes of perception and cognition- in this way, Rauschenberg both differs from, and continues the avant-garde project of political change.

Joseph makes a good case- in particular, his first chapter, on Rauschenberg and Cage, where he examines their interest in temporality and flux in relation to the ideas of Bergson, is quite brilliant. But the level of discussion is sustained throughout- it's a compelling and fascinating read which will doubtless provoke a great deal of thought.

As you would expect from the MIT Press, its not a study for the lay reader- the usual phalanx of thinkers are brought to bear- Foucault, Deleuze, Bataille and the like- although Joseph draws on them judiciously, without detracting from the focus of his study. In fact its very readable indeed- Joseph hasn't succumbed (yet) to the puffed-up rhetorical excesses of some of his October colleagues.

This is a great book to buy if your more the art historian type. If however, your are simply interested in getting a book with a collection of this fantastic artists work than this book is not for you.

YA-- Fuchs has done an effective job of driving home the human side of Hitler while relaying his malicious and self-centered personality. There are stories about Hitler's mustache, practical jokes, paying of personal income taxes, diet, wardrobe, religious beliefs, and other high German officials. The text is well written with a chronology and an extensive bibliography. Eight pages of black-and-white photographs reinforce some of the points made in the text. A book that gives a seldom-seen slant on Hitler's life, revealing him as an evil politician while showing his personal life through anecdotes.

Interesting, funny, and most of all entertaining.

The Hitler Fact Book easily caught my eye (maybe I was hypnotically stared enough!) because of the title and the picture of Adolf Hitler with his madman eyes, so I knew I had to buy it. Before I read the book, I knew very little about the once leader of the Third Reich because I hadn't bothered to care. After reading it, I can safely say that I came away knowledgeable about starting with his mustache and then from his facial features to meaning of German phrases such as Sieg Heil and Third Reich. Then, the book attempts to debunk myths (Hitler's sexuality and perverse sex tendencies) while leaving some confounding speculations (did Hitler have one testicle?) up in the air. At the same time, the author explores questions such as why didn't anyone attempt to kill Hitler, was he really an Anti-Semitic (a question that I had to ask because I felt that Hitler just used the angle just simply to secure a purpose for greatness), and did Hitler really invent the Volkswagen. It also explores what Hitler ate, his hypochondriacal personality, and what books he read (and was he a true lover of knowledge?). Really, there is so much information about Hitler in the book that I got surprised to learn. One of them was that he had blue eyes, something that I never knew because of the black/white photographs. Another one which dispelled a myth that Hitler didn't do anything in World War I astounded me as well. Moreover, there is a brief mention of an assassination attempt in the book about Colonel Claus con Stauffenberg, and right now, there is a new movie coming out about that starring Tom Cruise called Valkyrie (which probably will stink). To explore further the information contained in the book, the author has, in the end pages, nicely listed the specific parts with specific pages corresponding with the books in the bibliography. All in all, The Hitler Fact Book is a very enjoyable read yet amusing in a This Is Spinal Tap way.

A highly readable and useful book

I don't think you could come up with any question about Hitler -- no matter how silly, serious or obscure -- which isn't answered in this book. You can try, but you probably won't succeed. My young nephew was assigned this book in a college level history course. When I was in college, none of the history books we were forced to read were anywhere near as entertaining (if I can use that word about Hitler) and down-right fascinating as this one. It is carefully researched and documented, scholarly, without ever being the least pedantic. Even if you think you already know enough about Hitler, I highly recommend you read this book.

This is without a doubt the most useless book written on the subject of Adolph Hitler I have ever read.first of all,this book takes the all time winner prize for objectivity with quotes like,"To some degree,he(Hitler)has already become a legendary creature,rather like Dracula or Frankenstien's Monster,the stuff of horror movies or comedies."There is a small chaptercalled Hitler ln combat that starts of with,"What a tantilizing vision-Hitler killed in the first world war.Unfortunately,he not only survived the fighting,he thrived on it."with questionable information because of subjective,and lack of usefullness,this book will never be taken seriously by even an ametuer historian,as it is more a joke book for entertainment.Don't waist your money.

Can 1.2 billion exceptionally nervous nervous systems be wrong? No way, says depth psychologist Elaine Aron, bestselling author of The Highly Sensitive Person. An HSP herself, Aron is also the reigning expert on the subject, and this workbook exists to make you a more helpful expert on yourself. It can be read in conjunction with her more narrative book--the chapter headings match--or without it. "You should use this workbook in any way you darn well please," says Aron in a typical free-yourself comment.

So what is an HSP? Aron thinks one-fifth of humanity is born with more finely tuned perceptions than the rest. In primitive times, HSPs were the first to spot the lion lurking in the bush, the last to shoot the arrow--and the likeliest to hit the lion in one shot. Later, HSPs became the tempering priestly advisors to the more aggressive warrior kings. To be an HSP is a challenge and an opportunity, she argues. This book contains self-tests to determine whether you're an HSP, and if so, which kind: introverted, extroverted, sensation seeking, and other plausible categories. Some HSPs yearn for "earlids" to shut out sound, for instance. There are plenty of blanks to fill in as you analyze your childhood, health concerns, work history, and psychic wounds, with plenty of guidance on how to do it--sample entries as intriguing as someone else's diary. If you've ever wished you could go back and retort to somebody who said something hurtful that made you speechless, Aron has the exercise to channel your resentment into insight. She gives a quick course in dream analysis (Freud couldn't outdo her job on a dream about The A-Team's Mr. T and a tiger), and rather boldly invites you to envision and prepare for your death. There's also a practical guide to setting up HSP discussion groups with enough structure to prevent fizzle and poor focus.

This book Changed My Life

I bought this book after seeing the movie, "Sensitives: The Untold Story! " Changing my entire life!

Things I have been attempting to change my entire life were just NORMAL attributes of an HSP!! I cannot thank Elaine enough for writing this book and for the documentary made with a Kick Start campaign! I took her test on line at her site... highly sensitive person test, and answered yes to all the questions! I cover up most lights on my computer, printer, router and such. I have no sounds except the error sound on my computer. Never could watch violent movies, sensitive to bright lights, strong smells, loud sounds. Can feel everyone when walking into a room. If you "think" you might be one, it could change your life reading this book! I think you only need to answer yes to about 14 of the many questions.

I totally understood why my parents treated me the way they did. I was overly sensitive to so many things and they did not know what to do about it! They did not know "why"! Same with friends and teachers and my sister!

I am a CHANGED person and I Highly Recommend this book to Everyone! Why? Because you might have a friend, partner, child who is highly sensitive and knowing how to treat them, can change both your relationships. It turns out not only are 15 - 20% of humans highly sensitive, so are animals and insects in the same percentages! It is a Natural Trait and not an illness or disease. Scientists can see it in brain scans and DNA testing. We have been misdiagnosed for decades as being shy, withdrawn, depressed and so on, which is not true. I love, love, loved this book!

This may be the best book I have read in years

This may be the best book I have read in years. Maybe a decade. I was a year and a half into a very stressful job with a bully boss when I found this book -- I'd heard about it for years but thought the title sounded girlie and wimpy so I hesitated to read it. I don't like gooey, emotional, sappy stuff. Well guess what... no sap here. Or at least so little sap that a person who doesn't like sappy didn't really notice. Instead I found a smart, astute, science-based book which explained to me why I was slowly dying at my job, why I could not sleep at night, and why I was so stressed at work that I literally could not stomach my sandwich at lunch but would almost throw it up every day (but I could eat at home) -- I was operating at a level of physical stress which was impossible for a highly sensitive person to sustain, and yet I was somehow sustaining it. (I am very stubborn.) Once I actually looked at myself, looked at my actual situation, stopped blaming myself for being "weak" and "broken" and "not tough enough" and stopped trying to be what I am not, I saw clearly that I was ignoring my physical body's symptoms of extreme stress and hurting myself bad. Reading this was a wake up call at a time in my life when I really needed it, and gave me enough confidence to finally stand up to my impossible to please, bullying, manipulative boss and just quit. I am going back to school and retraining to become a software developer so that I can work in an environment that won't kill me. Not everyone is the same; everyone has different physical tolerances. If you find yourself "too sensitive" etc, give yourself a break. You are not a clone of the extrovert next to you. Pay attention to your body and read this book. IF YOU ARE AN EXTROVERT, PLEASE READ THIS BOOK. If you are NOT highly sensitive, please read this book!!! I wish to God every human being would read this book so people could finally start understanding each other, and society in general would stop hurting those among them who are not built with the same nervous system that the 80% majority of humanity has!!!! This has nothing to do with race boundaries, religion, nationality... this is all about pure genetics and how our species (in fact how over 100 species on this planet) function. It's ground breaking work.

Wow… This book was INCREDIBLE!!!! I'm still trying to take in everything that is brought to the front of my mind that I never realized or even thought about until I read this book. I don't think this is just for sensitive people but for everyone. If anyone has dealt with any kind of trauma in their lives or as a child that causes you to be an internal person than I think this book is for you. It will help you start to realize that you keep yourself in a protective shell inside your body because that's where you feel most comfortable. This book will help you realize what you've done to allow yourself to stay there and not become the person that you truly were meant to be. It's time to start dealing with your past once and for all and move PAST it… Letting anything control who you are and what you do isn't good. There is more happiness in your life than you could ever imagine.. Again this is a MUST READ.

Simply the Best!

I struggled through many textbooks on Control Systems Engineering until I finally found this one. The book is filled with practical examples of applied control systems theory. Each example is accompanied by straightforward explanations of how the pertinent equations are derived. I consider it one of my engineering "epiphany" books :)

A thru Z resource for control systems engineer

Everything you want to know about control system engineeringfrom basic mechanical principles to complex (advanced) multiple orderdifferential equations, PID controls, etc. I took two Dr. Palm's classes as an undergrad - (1) Control System Engineering and (2) Computer Control For Mecahanical Systems. Both courses used this textbook. I still use this book today.

THE BEST BOOK ON YOGA! Order it and enjoy it for life!

As a 14-year yoga practitioner and yoga teacher as well as a book lover, I highly recommend this. I have personally trained and continue to regularly study with the ever-so-humble author Swami Sivadasananda, and am so pleased that everyone can benefit from this master of yoga's knowledge in this clear and beautiful book. Very thorough and thoughtful with a superb and organized layout, it is the best book I have seen to address--for both beginner and seasoned yogi--the different aspects of yoga and gives valuable, comprehensible information about how yoga works to tone the inner and outer bodies and harmonize one's mental health. The asanas (yoga physical exercises) are presented clearly and given enough anatomical and physiological information to help, but not overwhelm the reader [in my opinion, not 'clinical,' but rather clear so we can see the body form and not overly aesthetic to deter from the focus of the exercise]. Chapters on positive thinking and meditation, pranayama (breathwork), and, very importantly, yogic vegetarian diet (for personal and environmental health) round out the book to provide a rich and complete system--which is what yoga truly is...not just a bunch of exercises that stretch the body. Prana and other more esoteric subjects are also discussed in accessible language. I especially admire the great consideration that has been given to these crucial topics so they are approachable to the general reader without diminishing their meaning. Covers the Essentials Well

I was introduced to Sivananda Yoga in May 06 by my Shiatsu masseuse. I had several sessions of Shiatsu for back pain relief. However, a few days after the session the pain returned. My masseuse told me that if I practiced Sivananda Yoga once a day it would significantly reduce my back pain. She covered the basic asanas with me in two sessions. I ordered "The Sivananda Companion to Yoga..." and "Yoga 101 Essential Tips". I began performing the asanas on my own using both books as my guide. They are easy to read and fully explain the asanas.

"The Sivananda Companion to Yoga..." is more detailed. It gives a great (but brief) history of Yoga along with breathing, meditation, diet info. and health benefits (in detail using photos). My favorite part of this book is the chart for 30m or 90m sessions and also additional asanas as my routine advances. I use this book when I have more time to experiment with new asanas or as a reference.

"Yoga 101 Essential Tips" covers every basic asana and briefly touchs on diet, meditation, etc. I use this book daily because it covers a complete session.

I am a newby at yoga and highly recommend both books. As a result of doing yoga from them for approximately 3-4 weeks my body feels great, my back pain is relieved and I have either toned or lost inches around the abdomen and thighs which has always been difficult for me. My sugar cravings have decreased (once a daily user of Coca Cola and Haribo Gummies) and coffee is not desired. I am also working on a better diet from recommendations in the book.

101 Essential Tips Yoga

A key part of Sivananda yoga is breathing with the movements. This is sadly lacking from a number of the postures illustreated in this book. There are also some postures which are considered by many yoga schools to be unsafe - namely where the neck is taken back, eg cobra, and double leg lifts. I found the book disappointing and shall not be recommending it.

In a book that is at once passionate and provocative, Stephen Hopgood argues, against the conventional wisdom, that the idea of universal human rights has become not only ill adapted to current realities but also overambitious and unresponsive. A shift in the global balance of power away from the United States further undermines the foundations on which the global human rights regime is based. American decline exposes the contradictions, hypocrisies and weaknesses behind the attempt to enforce this regime around the world and opens the way for resurgent religious and sovereign actors to challenge human rights.

Historically, Hopgood writes, universal humanist norms inspired a sense of secular religiosity among the new middle classes of a rapidly modernizing Europe. Human rights were the product of a particular worldview (Western European and Christian) and specific historical moments (humanitarianism in the nineteenth century, the aftermath of the Holocaust). They were an antidote to a troubling contradiction—the coexistence of a belief in progress with horrifying violence and growing inequality. The obsolescence of that founding purpose in the modern globalized world has, Hopgood asserts, transformed the institutions created to perform it, such as the International Committee of the Red Cross and recently the International Criminal Court, into self-perpetuating structures of intermittent power and authority that mask their lack of democratic legitimacy and systematic ineffectiveness. At their best, they provide relief in extraordinary situations of great distress; otherwise they are serving up a mixture of false hope and unaccountability sustained by “human rights” as a global brand.

The Endtimes of Human Rights is sure to be controversial. Hopgood makes a plea for a new understanding of where hope lies for human rights, a plea that mourns the promise but rejects the reality of universalism in favor of a less predictable encounter with the diverse realities of today’s multipolar world.

Demise of the Human Rights Regime

The basic tenet of that book is the distinction between human rights and Human Rights. The first can be full truth, the second fails the test of truthfulness. The capitalized Human Rights Regime is the collective of declarations, conventions and their official international and national institutions. It is a phenomenon that grew quickly from the 1970s and, according to Hopgood, is deemed to expire. For good reason, he thinks. Hopgood's book abounds with examples of how Human Rights Regimists invented norms and institutions that were supposed to 'deal' with gruesome situations, and in the end made no difference. As was the case in Sudan, Sri Lanka and Syria. As is happening with the International Criminal Court (ICC), the 'Responsibility to Protect' (R2P), the Cambodia Tribunal. Those who support these institutions claim that the world tends towards a globalization of transnational justice. But the actual direction, says Hopgood, is neo-Westphalian. Countries and cultures are not converging into a huge human rights pool, they are rather diverging into the separate domains of their political culture, religion and regional power. International human rights organizations, such as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, are far from immune from this. Hopgood is an excellent critic: he is sharp, quotes from the widest array of sources and secondary literature, knows how to tell a story and argue a point. At places, one can only hope Hopgood is not completely right. That even if the ICC, the R2P and other UN machinery may collapse, there will be enough left of covenants and monitoring for human rights work to survive - sadder, slimmer and wiser.
