About the Author
Rob Preece has been a practicing Buddhist since 1973, principally within the Tibetan tradition. He has spent many years in intensive retreat in the Himalayas under the guidance of eminent Tibetan lamas. Preece has been working as a psychotherapist since 1987 and gives workshops on comparative Jungian and Buddhist psychology. An experienced meditation teacher and thangka painter, he lives in London and is the author of The Wisdom of Imperfection and The Psychology of Buddhist Tantra.

Invaluable perspective on Tibetan Ngondro practices

On my spiritual path, I found that I excellently and fortunately have a karma connection to a Tibetan lama. When I was allowed to begin the preliminary practices, however, they seemed culturally alien, and while I understood the practices conceptually, I struggled to bring them into my heart. Rob Preece's book has been an invaluable bridge to allow my preliminary practice to become focused on removing the obstacles to true dharma practice as encountered by a western person.
His cultural version of the mandala offering prayer is worth the price of the book alone, and epitomizes the practice cutting through attachments required on this path.
There are now quite a number of books that describe the mechanics of the practice, presented from a very traditional viewpoint. This one helps people explore the heart of the practice, allowing the path of transformation to unfold.

Jung Practices Ngondro

Preece reprises his Jungian take on Tibetan Buddhism, this time focused on ngondro, or the so-called preliminary practices the meditator engages as an entryway into the Vajrayana path. Preece shares his own experience with the five classic practices -- prostrations, refuge and bodhicitta, purification, offering and devotion -- plus several more that, altho not a part of the traditional practice, are equally important. For those practitioners looking for a psychological framework, in this case Jungian, this book may be interesting.

Great fun for kids

Another great book for kids by beloved author Erik Brooks. This is a sweet story of friendship and and opposites attraction with some fabulous illustrations to boot. A must-have for every grade school classroom and picture book section of your local bookstore.

Long after reading we went on and on with thought up opposites.

"Polar Opposites", by Erik Brooks, was a delight to read with my granddaughter. As described the text is rather simple, however, its wonderful watercolor illustrations complement the text and more than adequately, and very easily, tell the story of "Polar Opposites".

The book itself has a sturdy binding, reinforced, and nicely sized for children at about 11 1/2 x 9 inches. The colorful book cover is inviting, too, and the pages are easily turned by small fingers.

Opposites is what it's all about, beginning with two friends, a polar bear and a penguin from opposite parts of the globe and goes on to illustrate how very different they are. It's an introduction to geography as well as an indication of how opposite, or different, things can be. We had special fun throughout, and after the reading, with making up opposites for each other. Still a favorite of my granddaughter and a book that will surely be read again and again.

Fun with various opposites for 3-7 yr. olds

Polar Opposites teaches children about all types of opposites. As I read it to my preschool students, they pointed out something different each time. There are the obvious opposites: big vs. tiny; shaggy vs. smooth; getting up late vs. rising early; sweet vs. sour; messy vs. neat. The text lends itself to being read aloud. The reader can really ham it up to the delight of the audience.

The author really took time to think about the text and even more time to imagine the illustrations for each page spread. Each time you look at the illustrations and contrast the two characters' way of life, you see another not-so-obvious form of opposites. One such illustration page shows Alex, the polar bear, cleaning off with a towel with a mess of soap and shampoo by his feet. In contrast, Zina, the penguin, has a squeegee and neat "Beluga Bubbles" by her feet.

A lot of care went into the illustrations. It is obvious that the illustrator and author were of the same mind - being the same person. So often, children's books are written by one person and illustrated by another, sometimes not even meeting in person.

Judge these cards by their size, I do!

For some reason they decided to shrink the size of the landscape-oriented cards and a lot of the detail is lost. In contrast, the portrait-oriented cards are presented slightly larger than actual size (similar to how they appeared in the first volume) and the difference in image quality is striking (and kind of frustrating when you realize how much better the landscape cards COULD have looked). I appreciate that they were cramming the fronts and backs of each card on the same page, so some downsizing was necessary---but there is a LOT of white space bordering these spreads that could have contained more card image. Still recommend the book as a handy means to browse the entire card set, but a big step backwards from the previous volume.

A very nice substitute for the orginal card sets

I love this series of books,and they are well worth the price. The presentation, layout, and artwork are fantastic. I have been tempted many to times to assemble a full set of the Topps series for the Star Wars films, but I think I prefer having these books instead. My only minor nitpick is with the comments under some of the cards. Seems like so much more information could be shared or at least the information could be accurate. However, they are really nice books, and I look forward to completing the set with Return of the Jedi.

Good Quality, but doesn't match Volume One :(

Amazing full color images of the original cards released for Empire Strikes back. Unlike Volume One however, each card does not get a full page to shine. Most cards have to share with the reverse of the card. Unfortunately, Topps shows that they could have given each card it's own page, by doing it for some cards, while shrinking others. Also disappointing is at the end when they reprint the oversized cards. Instead of turning the horizontal oriented cards 90 degrees and showcasing them like their vertical counterparts, Topps shrinks them down and prints smaller images so the reader doesn't have to turn the book. The trade-off would have been OK Topps, if I had to turn the book to view the image. I would have been viewing a bigger and better quality image.

I also didn't see as many notes this time around on the individual cards as I did with Volume One. That is just my perception though, as I haven't sat down and counted them to see if there is an actual difference.

Overall, try to see it in person before buying.

OK for the Basics

I think that all of North Americas sea shore critters can not be described in a single book. Certainly not in a book of this size. The publishers where quite bold in the scope and as such much information has been left out. That said let me tell you what is good about this book. The pictures are GREAT! Much better than looking at technical drawings. However, they are not better for identification. The descriptions of animal groups are excellent. For the person with little biological background this will go a good way toward explaining the complexities of ocean life. The method of identification, sorting by superficial appearance is handy, again for the inexperienced. To sum it up, if you want one book to carry during your first summer of beach combing get this one. If you need a companion for a marine zoology class stay away, unless you already have everything else.

Good field guide and beautiful picture book

Perhaps I am going overboard in giving this guide a five star review but even a book with an adequate selection of color photos of marine invertebrates is just so darn beautiful I can't help but cause me to rave and this bok offers a selection that is more than just adequate. There is no way one can include all of the seashore creatures of US into one volume let alone a field guide and Audubon guides are not the best things to use for taxonomy. That being said it is a gorgeous little book and certainly helpful to the average beachcomber. Even if you are a Midwestern landlubber this is a great little volume. If nothing else consider it a mini coffee table book.

I found out about Marine creatures in my Marine Bio. class, and I loved them, so I got this book to further my looking into their world, and it's great. A must have for any person interested in going to the seashore, and just watching what runs around in those tidepools and on the beach.

With many American colleges now trying to bring their undergraduate mathematics curriculum closer to applications, it seems worthwhile to translate Soviet textbooks which reflect their greater experience in this area of mathematical pedagogy.

Horror Writing for TV

The Writing Dead: Talking Terror with TV's Top Horror Writers was published March 3, 2015 by University Press of Mississippi. The book is divided up into 4 main parts with an introduction to the book and acknowledgements.

“I just write about what scares me. When I was a kid, my mother used to say, ‘Think of the worst thing that you can, and if you say it out loud then it won’t come true.’ And that’s probably been the basis of my career.” -Stephen King

Each section of the book has interviews with writers related to that topic. There are quite a variety of writers interviewed including those who write or wrote for Hannibal, Dexter, Bates Motel, True Blood, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Supernatural, Grimm, Angel, The Walking Dead, Hemlock Grove, Being Human, American Horror Story, X-Files, and Millenium. Each part of the book that focuses on a particular writer or series type, starts with a brief synopsis of why they were included and then goes into a transcript of an interview by Thomas Fahy with the author.

What I found interesting about the book is somewhat the usual things that one would take away from such a book, how the writer’s come up with their ideas and write. I enjoyed reading about all of the authors and found it interesting to see some of the other things in their career that they wrote before they came to horror and how it affected what they wrote.

I ended up giving this book 4 stars. I would recommend it to others as a good read or as a gift for someone who enjoys learning more about the behind the scenes writing of their favorite horror programs and movies. It’s interesting to see the connections between a movie that has become a series or a series of books that becomes a tv series. It’s also interesting to see how a particular writer’s previous projects affected what they in turn wrote for the horror programs.

Some excellent insights into writnig horror, based on thirteen interviews from some of the best horror writers out there. Since I know most of the TV series the writers worked on, I was very intrigued to read more about their thoughts and insights. An enjoyable, engaging book that fans of those TV shows will no doubt love. I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

An interesting read.

I don’t review all that many non-fiction books. The reason I chose this one when it was offered on the Netgalley website is plain. It’s published by a university press and it’s the only way I was ever going to be able to afford to read it.

It’s exactly what it says on the cover. A series of interviews with people involved in writing horror series for TV. They include some of television’s biggest names—Carlton Cuse (Lost and Bates Motel), Bryan Fuller (Hannibal, Dead Like Me, Wonderfalls, Pushing Daisies), David Greenwalt (Angel and Grimm), Gale Anne Hurd (The Walking Dead, The Terminator series, Aliens, and The Abyss), Jane Espenson (Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Battlestar Galactica), Brian McGreevy (Hemlock Grove), Alexander Woo (True Blood), James Wong (The X-Files, Millennium, American Horror Story, and Final Destination), Frank Spotnitz (The X-Files and Millennium), Richard Hatem (Supernatural, The Dead Zone, and The Mothman Prophecies), Scott Buck (Dexter), Anna Fricke (Being Human), and Jim Dunn (Haven).

It’s obvious from the get-go that it’s centred firmly on US TV, so you get the writer of the American version of ‘Being Human’, rather than the original British version. There’s a gaping hole where ‘Afterlife’ and ‘Ghostwatch’ author, Stephen Volk should be. Also the time issues involved in producing such a book preclude the inclusion of the writers of ‘Penny Dreadful’, ‘The Strain’, or ‘True Detective’ being included.

It’s still a very interesting read, and it’s a huge shame that the hefty price tag will keep it out of the hands of many potential readers. As one would expect, the various interviewees have differing opinions on what works, and what doesn’t, but it’s actually quite surprising how often they do agree.

I very much enjoyed reading the book, but I have to be honest and admit that it wouldn’t have been worth the price tag, had I bought a hard copy. It is, however, relatively cheap compared to many such publications. I suspect there will eventually be a Kindle edition, but in my experience of university press books, it probably won’t be a great deal cheaper than the hardcover.

"Eiji Tsuburaya was a very reserved man on the set. Most of the direction he gave me for the performances was, 'I trust you to do it. Do what you feel is best, I'll leave it up to you.' And that's the way he was for most of the films we worked on together after Godzilla. After the wires broke on the Rodan suit, causing me to fall several meters onto the miniature set, he chided, 'It's good that you didn't die; because I need you to finish the film.' And I replied, 'That's easy for you to say; I'm the one inside the costume.' But, these things would sometimes happen. It's been forty-three years since Tsuburaya has left us, but what a happy feeling to have a book published about him after all this time. And that it came not from Japan, but from the U.S.! Tsuburarya IS The Master!

If you like giant monster movies, and want to know more about how they were made, this book is for you. Not many photos of the monsters (there are other books out there for that) but there are behind the scenes photos. Learn the biographies of the men who made films you still love after all these years. Not much has been published in the West about them, but here it is! Well written and laid out. 2 page essays about certain film makers by noted Western Kaiju lovers. Worth the price, and thankful that it was printed.
