About the Author

Glenn Hubbard, policymaker, professor, and researcher. R. Glenn Hubbard is the dean and Russell L. Carson Professor of Finance and Economics in the Graduate School of Business at Columbia University and professor of economics in Columbia’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences. He is also a research associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research and a director of Automatic Data Processing, Black Rock Closed-End Funds, and MetLife. He received his Ph.D. in economics from Harvard University in 1983. From 2001 to 2003, he served as chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers and chairman of the OECD Economic Policy Committee, and from 1991 to 1993, he was deputy assistant secretary of the U.S. Treasury Department. He currently serves as co-chair of the nonpartisan Committee on Capital Markets Regulation. Hubbard’s fields of specialization are public economics, financial markets and institutions, corporate finance, macroeconomics, industrial organization, and public policy. He is the author of more than 100 articles in leading journals, including American Economic Review, Brookings Papers on Economic Activity, Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial Economics, Journal of Money, Credit, and Banking, Journal of Political Economy, Journal of Public Economics, Quarterly Journal of Economics, RAND Journal of Economics, and Review of Economics and Statistics. His research has been supported by grants from the National Science Foundation, the National Bureau of Economic Research, and numerous private foundations.

 

Tony O’Brien, award-winning professor and researcher. Anthony Patrick O’Brien is a professor of economics at Lehigh University. He received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1987. He has taught principles of economics for more than 20 years, in both large sections and small honors classes. He received the Lehigh University Award for Distinguished Teaching. He was formerly the director of the Diamond Center for Economic Education and was named a Dana Foundation Faculty Fellow and Lehigh Class of 1961 Professor of Economics. He has been a visiting professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and the Graduate School of Industrial Administration at Carnegie Mellon University. O’Brien’s research has dealt with issues such as the evolution of the U.S. automobile industry, the sources of U.S. economic competitiveness, the development of U.S. trade policy, the causes of the Great Depression, and the causes of black—white income differences. His research has been published in leading journals, including American Economic Review, Quarterly Journal of Economics, Journal of Money, Credit, and Banking, Industrial Relations, Journal of Economic History, and Explorations in Economic History. His research has been supported by grants from government agencies and private foundations.

Great end to a wonderful cycle

Dissension was a fabulous book that wrapped up the series nicely while creating a new and engaging tale fitting all of our favorite characters.

This book successfully incorporates the previously separate storylines of the first and second books and weaves a tale in which our characters must work hard and try new things. I loved how the author threw twists and turns though there were a few times (e.g. with the guardians) where I wish they had explained more about the aftermath of them. I understand this may be asking for too much but while I got closure from the characters I felt there was more about the world of Ravnica that I was still curious about and had wanted more answers for.

Overall though, Cory Herndon is successful in his conclusion to the Ravnica block, with wonderful and complex new characters and environments. By far, this was the best book in the Ravnica Cycle.

A Worthy End To The (Original) Ravnica Cycle

As a rule, the third books in MTG trilogies tend to be burdened by the responsibility of tying together all the dangling plot points left by the previous two books together as neatly and efficiently as possible. More than once this has led to underwhelming climaxes, such as those in the Apocalypse and Scourge books. Dissension unfortunately continues this tradition, being forced, much like 2007's Spider-Man 3, to shove two climatic battles together towards the book's end. But for all the underwhelming climax, this book's superb characterization save it. The protagonist Agrus Kos, forced once again into a new allegiance to justify his presence, is serviceable as a hard-boiled cop archetype, but the real stars are the supporting characters. Jarad and Fonn are wonderful as guild leaders turned parents, Rakdos and Momir Vig are a joy to read (and if Herndon had gone the way of Vance Moore and made the entire third arc Vig-centric, I would not have complained), and the original character, Myc Zunich, feels in many ways like the true protagonist of the narrative, as opposed to Agrus Kos's weathered old hero. This novel holds the distinction of being the last MTG novel I ever read, as I've since retired from the game (hard to believe it's been seven years already), and as a coda to the stories and characters I grew up with, it carries its weight.

Every lesson stands as a single unit. The format is simple,the author discuss an example and mention the "theorical" concept behind the chess mistake, but adding the human factor too.

You can work on this book in sequential order or jump to the topic (problems) that are more critical to your chess.
My chess skill level is not very high (around 1930 USCF) so I spent a lot of time in each lesson as at least half of the positions (6-12) at the end of the chapter are new. For example, in Chapter 1 I solved the positions before reading the chapter to evaluate my chess knowledge. The position comming from Kings indian like structures were easy: One was a exchange Sac on F4 to activate your KID bishop,capture a pawn and get your Queen closer to White's king. Next a KID like position with White blocking the Kingside with h5 (easy, 2 years ago one of my opponents used this idea against me...). Now the hard positions(for me): middlegame position with isolated pawn I founded the first move, but the followed a weak plan: attacking the king. The best option force favorable exhanges around the isolated pawn and get the superior minor piece...

This book will help you depending on your chess skill level.
Below 2000 USCF most of us have problems time to time selecting the right plan, calculating too much, transitioning to the endgame and with mistake due to lack of chess culture...

A bonus from this book is that you can play the position with your study patner and then look at Popov suggestions.
I play "interesting-unbalanced positions" for training purposes with a 2000+ training patner similar to the author's reccomendations.The problem was that at the end of the"game" and of the 'post mortem" we have to go home and try to figure it out if our analysis were right. Tactical errors are easy to spot with a computer but strategic errors are not. Popov's explanation will take care of this time consumming and labor intensive part.

I like this book and it will help your chess. Please read the content table carefully and the pdf samples from the publisher website before buying the book. This is not a spoon fed type book.

im half way through the book,and my chess has dramitically improved especially my thought and thinking towards every position i face.its not an easy book and difficulty is high but i didnt give up and enjoy the few examples it gives before you solve some puzzels in the end.My rating is 1250 and im sure higher rated players will also enjoy the book.

Don't waste your money

This has to be one of the worst books on the subject of positional evaluation and planning. The author writes on page 19:
"Obviously the term evaluation is inseparably linked to the concept of the positional elements. A
classification of these elements can be found in various books; for instance in his excellent work
Think like a Grandmaster (1970), Alexander Kotov identifies four major categories:
(1) Open lines and diagonals
(2) The pawn structure and weak squares
(3) Piece placement
(4) Space and the centre"

He gives no explanations of how one might apply such ideas. A superior book on this same subject is "Chess Strategy for Club Players" by Herman Grooten. Grooten shows how to evaluate a position based on the 7 criteria used by Karpov and Mazukevich found in "Find The Right Plan"; which is also superior to chess lessons by popov...bottom line, don't waste your money!

His research involves the development and application of numerical models to understand the effects of energy systems, vehicles and other emission sources on climate and air pollution and the analysis of renewable energy resources. He received the 2005 American Meteorological Society Henry G. Houghton Award, based in part on his discovery that black carbon may be the second-leading cause of global warming after carbon dioxide. He co-authored a 2009 cover article in Scientific American (with Dr Mark DeLucchi) on how to power the world with renewable energy. In 2010 he was appointed to the Energy Efficiency and Renewables Advisory Committee by the US Secretary of Energy. He has taught courses on Atmospheric Pollution and Climate; Weather and Storms; Air Pollution Modeling; and Numerical Weather Prediction. He has published over 110 peer-reviewed journal articles and another textbook: Fundamentals of Atmospheric Modeling (Second Edition, 2005; Cambridge University Press).

Excellent Primer and Reference on Air Pollution

Atmospheric Pollution is an excellent primer and reference on air pollution and air quality issues facing the world today. Written essentially as a textbook, nevertheless, it is highly readable and a good, basic, factual overview of the pollutants, pollutant processes, laws and regulations, and current issues in air quality protection.

Tara L. Masih received a BA in English and a minor in sociology from C. W. Post College, and an MA in Writing and Publishing from Emerson College (where she taught freshman composition and grammar). As an in-house editor, she worked for Little, Brown's college division and Bedford Books of St. Martin's Press, and now freelances for companies such as Ballantine Books and Harvard University Press. Her writing has won awards, and�several flash fiction chapbooks were published by The Feral Press. She is author of the story collection Where the Dog Star Never Glows (Press 53), editor of the award-winning Chalk Circle: Intercultural Prizewinning Essays (Wyatt-MacKenzie), and series editor of The Best Small Fictions (Queen's Ferry Press).

A Must-Buy Book for Anyone Interested in Writing Flash Fiction

I bought this book as soon as I read a review about it in "The Writer" Magazine (Dec 09, pg 44, by Amy Wallen).

In an irony to the subject, flash fiction, the introduction of this field guide is the longest chapter in the entire book, weighing-in at 26 pages. Despite its length, Ms. Misah provides the reader with an interesting history of flash fiction.

I found the essays within this guidebook to be useful and informative. Each essay ranged from 3-9 pages, which included a writing prompt and an example of flash fiction. As you could expect, the authors had some differences of opinion on what makes an effective short-short story. What they did agree on, was that each story should be thought-provoking and leave the reader with an indelible image.

I found most of the story examples, "thought provoking" alright. My usual responses were, "huh?" or even, "What was that all about?"

I guess I'm not the literary type. I'm not into deciphering an author's meaning and images in his or her story.

My favorite was "Inside Job" by Pamela Painter. In this flash--(warning! Plot spoiler ahead!)--a university couple are attending a party. After noticing her husband hit on another one of his graduate students, Marla goes into the kitchen to grab a drink, but accidently douses her blouse with seltzer water. One of Marla's graduate students tries to help dab off the water and she guides his hand--underneath her blouse.

Whew!

Talk about an "indelible image!"

I rate this book a solid four stars. This is more out of personal bias. With the exception of "Inside Job," it's hard for me to get excited over a how-to book. However, for anyone interested in writing flash fiction, or improving their craft in this niche-genre, this is an invaluable guide.

A Great Kick in the Pants to Write!

I bought this book after hearing about it at the 2010 AWP conference in Denver. The collection of essays are from different writers, teachers, and editors and when put together, makes a varied and well-rounded discussion on a somewhat fluid genre. The format for each contributor is an essay followed by a flash example and a relative exercise. It's simple and to the point, yet still creative and thought stimulating.

Later that summer, I slowly progressed through my "field guide," taking time to digest each essay with its writing exercises. I thought of it like poetry. I could've read through the entire book in a day, but in order to let it soak in, I savored every word, paragraph, and essay and used the experience to guide, inspire, and give me the kick in the pants I needed to continue flexing my writing brain over the summer.

In addition to enjoying my time spent writing with my "field guide," I've since had two of the short-shorts I wrote over that summer published. If you need your own kick in the pants, you'll be glad you bought this book to inspire and guide you while you explore this exhilarating form!

What to do when your fiction, long or short, stalls? The Rose Metal Press "Field Guide to Writing Flash Fiction" provides exercises, examples, motivational quotations, and advice.

Whether the writer is working on a novel, a true flash fiction piece, or something inbetween, this manual, edited by Tara Mashih, is readable and helpful.

The analogy of musicians playing scales on the piano or plucking them endlessly on the guitar, reminds writers that sometimes we need to warm up the writing part of our brain. In doing so, memories are released, our imaginations go places we have not considered before, and voila! a new story awaits us.

There are also definitions of what flash or sudden fiction is, what editors are looking for, and how to use flash fiction as a gateway to getting published.

As a frequent participant in flash fiction contests, I found many helpful hints in this volume. It is one I will turn to frequently when the Muse is not wafting my way.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED text for all 3-8 grade teachers of reading and writing!

This is an excellent book for new as well as seasoned teachers! The authors, Jennifer Berne and Sophie Degener, present a concrete framework and many examples for how teachers can provide meaningful instruction during student-teacher conference time--i.e. challenging students to THINK about how to improve the quality of their writing and access complex, sophisticated levels of understanding from the texts they read. Supportively aligned with the rigor of Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts, this text clearly yet concisely defines strategies and approaches teachers can readily utilize to maximize one-on-one interactions with students and prompt thinking that improves and "stretches" students' literacy knowledge.
