A very different side of Bram Stoker

What was the author of Dracula up to, when not occupied with the undead? Surprisingly, he was writing romances. This book is worth acquiring just to see an entirely different side of Bram Stoker.

The story begins with a girlish joke. Joy Ogilvie, an American beauty, is on an ocean voyage with her family. The Irish stewardess tells Joy there's only one man in the world worthy of her: the Earl of Athlyne, whom Mrs. O'Brien nursed as an infant. Joy, her aunt and Mrs. O'Brien take to calling Joy "Lady Athlyne," and the jest spreads to their circle back home.

Eventually a rumor reaches Lord Athlyne that a woman in New York is claiming to be his wife. As he prepares to investigate incognito, the plot is set in motion.

I'll say no more about the ensuing coincidences, misunderstandings and misadventures in store for the reader, so you may come to them fresh. For me the most astonishing quality of this 1908 novel is its eroticism. A tremendous magnetic attraction arises between Joy Ogilvie and Lord Athlyne from their first meeting. There's no explicit sex, but plenty of smoldering passion. The author exults the physical love between soul mates as an awe-inspiring force of nature, "the last and final touch of the creator's hand."

Bram Stoker was writing this novel at the time of fast changing gender politics. He's by no means a feminist, but he's doing his best to get with the phenomenon of the independent, openly sexual New Woman.

Some of characters are a bit one-dimensional, and their actions obviously contrived to further the plot. But still, Lady Athlyne has a certain charm, with touches of humor, and I'm finding this transitional literary period interesting to explore.

I've reread Dracula, The Lair of the White Worm, The Jewel of the Seven Stars and various of Stoker's short stories countless times since middle school, and a few years back decided that I needed to read his lesser-known work. I read his romance The Snake's Pass and enjoyed it well enough. I decided to tackle Lady Athlyne next and ... it's been a struggle. So much so that this is the one booked named in my 2014 "To Be Read" Challenge that I didn't actually finish in 2014. But I made the push and finished the book in January 2015 instead.

At least I can say I read it. But the two star rating should clue people in that this really wasn't an enjoyable experience. Stoker is known for being drawn-out and sometimes repetitive (Dracula certainly has its share of both types of moments and yet it remains one of my all-time favorite novels), but Lady Athlyne brings those quirks into sharp light. This is a story that could have been told in half the pages and been much more compelling -- all the author would have needed to do was cut all the pages in which there was no character or plot development because he was too busy pontificating on the Nature of Love (or the Nature of Womanhood, Girlhood, Manhood, Family, Society, etc.). I think ultimately this is why the book was such a struggle for me: the constant digressions bringing the plot and character development to a complete stop. Every time it happened, I found myself setting the book aside to do/read/listen to something else. I finally bulled my way through, skimming the Pontificating Pages and watching for plot or character progression moments.

I liked the naive Joy Ogilvie and the dashing Lord Athlyne (who manages, through family history, to be an English, Irish and Scottish lord, and seems distantly related to Lucy Westenra from Dracula). I had no problem with the frequent road-blocks the author threw in their path to a happy ending, including Joy's over-the-top, masculine, easily-offended charicature of a father; this is a romance after all and so things should not go smoothly for Our Heroine and her Man. But those digressions hurt my overall opinion of the book.

Decent effort at decoding security concepts in Dynamics AX 2012 R3

Security in Dynamics AX is a crucial area often overlooked in normal AX implementations. In AX 2012, security has become more significant due to the complexity and scale of standard functionalities and features of the product. Therefore I went through this book with much interest. There are plenty of security related info for both experienced and novice AX developers and administrations in this book.The author has covered security aspects such as CAS, TPF and XDS so credit to him. The technical details covered in the book are accurate. The book also briefly touches up on an interesting but often overlooked feature called 'organization hierarchies'. I would have liked to see contents such as end to end example such as managing security roles and underlying processes such as assigning users to this role etc, explanation of pain points surrounding security, security development tool (which works with R3 version) etc. But overall, this book offers decent insight into the security domain within Dynamics AX.

Working with security in AX2012 is quite different compared to earlier versions of Dynamics AX. One huge difference is the need to have some basic understanding of how security is defined within the application itself. This book starts off with laying down some basics of how security artifacts are defined in the AOT and further builds on top of that skillset. Debugging your security is covered, and also how security through the Extensible Data Security (XDS) is setup in Dynamics AX. The final chapters discuss how to extend the organization model and finally how to secure your Enterprise Portal (EP) artifacts.

It is a compact book with less than 80 pages and a handful chapters. The content is built for Dynamics AX2012 R3, but is relevant for earlier versions of AX2012. If you're already an AX developer, you can skip over most of developer basics. As someone who is curious to understand the mechanics under the hood, I could have wished for more in depth details, but the book does a fairly well job covering security for AX2012 R3.

SCARY SCIENCE FICTION

Having read the Alien vs Predator comics back when I read comic books, I was thrilled when I saw the trailer for this film at the local multi-plex. Then I saw the book and had to have it because I think the Predator movies are great, and so are the first two Alien flicks. I even thought Alien 3 and Resurrection were okay (Ron Pearlman is in Resurrection!), though they both had dull parts and lacked the horrific and spooky stuff from the first two Alien movies.
Now comes AVP, and if this novelization is any indication, the movie is gonna kick A! The fusion of the two series monsters into a single book/movie is really well done. It's smart and original and yet faithful to elements from both movie series.
There's a Sigourney Weaver/Ripley character, called Lex, who gets sucked into the action against her will, and (expect no spoilers from me) a really clever connection to the first two Alien films that is all the more impressive because the action in AVP is set on Earth in the present, while the previous Alien films all take place in the future in outer space.
There is a sense of wonder in the novel (I haven't seen the movie so can't comment) that is lacking in most of the science fiction I've read lately. AVP gives you a feeling of awe and creepiness at the same time--dark science fiction at its best.
The setting, Antarctica, is also cool (forgive the pun). This book reminded me of The Thing with Kirk Russell because it's frightening and gory and full of action at the same time--and both are set at the South Pole, too.
Some of the most interesting stuff comes in the middle of the action, when Lex speculates on how the Predators evolved. She even has a theory about why Predators have crab-faces that is neat and gross at the same time. This section of the novel takes place in Lex's head, so I don't know if it will be in the movie, but fans of the Alien/Predator series should not miss this speculation because it is original and really believable, too. After you read it, you won't be able to look at the Predators in quite the same way again!
Weirdest of all, you find yourself rooting for either Aliens or Predators (depending on which creature is your favorite) and glad that Lex decides to pick a side, even if its not the side you would have picked. The monster she hooks up with is as real a character as the humans, and you want to see him again just like you want to see Lex--in a sequel maybe?
In a really fascinating prolog we see the Aliens and Predators in action in the past--both in prehistoric times and in the early part of the last century, at a whaling station. The author even compares and contrasts the humans who hunt food, or whales, or who work for a corporate 'predator' with the real Predators from outer space.
Who wins? I'll never tell. But if you read this book and see the movie, I'll bet you'll come away feeling like you are the real winner!

Pretty darn decent

Having seen the movie first and being dissapointed at the lack of gore due to the producers wanting a PG rating, I was happy to see the author wasn't afraid to graphically describe what was going on. The book is written for people without much knowledge about the whole Predator/Aliens universe except what's in the movies, I think, since it doesn't use any Yautja language terms or discuss their culture much. So if you're deep into the fandom, you might be unsatisfied with this. Otherwise, it's entertaining and contains an alternative spin on the movie, getting deeper into the plot and explaining quite a few things that were unclear. The book does tend to overexplain sometimes, but a good read overall.

Just as good, but different...

First off, this is not really a novelization of the final movie, but of the screenplay. For example, the movie had three hunters, the book has five - The first drafts of the film started out with five hunters. Also, the first chapter is set in 2000 BC and the second in 1904, so the book lays more of a foundation for the plot than the movie. Of course a book can get into details and character's thoughts, so it seems a tad more complex. I really enjoyed it, but thought more could have been done with both the Predators and the Aliens.
