These range from signs of sanctity or demonic possession in ancient times to religious wonder, curiosity, and medical mystery. Anorexia nervosa is seen as a recent manifestation arising from changes in Western society at the end of the 19th century. While acknowledging anorexia as a primarily female phenomenon, the authors touch on other forms of self-starvation common to both sexes including hunger strikes and fasting as therapy. While this topic is of popular interest, and many self-help titles exist, this work concentrating on the historical aspects of self starvation will primarily interest scholars and informed lay readers. A very intense history of eating disorders, patterns of the illness, and examples of how society has viewed food denial in different ways. The book covers the saints who abstained from food, Victorian hysterics, and tragic cases like the Welsh Fasting Girl. Men are covered as well as women, and it is very well written, thoughtful and worth a read.

Lots of antiquity
By crime scene
Loads of interesting research from pre-1850's. Not a lot as food refusal relates to anorexia nervosa as it is understood today. Reads like a very accessible text book.
