from slavery to the vote
By W Boudville
Titles are meant to be brief. So you should understand that this book's title refers to women's history in the United States. The passages in it are all drawn from writings in American history. The gamut goes from pre revolution to the present. This sweep of time means that excerpts are necessarily short. But maybe the interested reader can appreciate the gist of the viewpoints.

The topics are most varied. Some refer to the interplay between the aristocratic woman's role on a plantation and her dealings and management of its slaves. Here, gender, race and class all combine. A completely different take are passages about women in the abolitionist movement, which gave a means for respectable middle class women to take public stances and give speeches. This in pre civil war United States was when few other contexts allowed women to assume active roles in public discourse.

Another issue is reproductive rights; which means not just abortion but access to knowledge about it. Perhaps related to this are the many passages about women's suffrage. While women being able to vote seems axiomatic today, the reader is sharply reminded that earlier times did not consider it so; at least as far as the decision makers [men] were concerned.

Everyone should read this book
By Mellissa
O boy I love this book It tells all about the history of women in America I never in my life new some of the amazing details of how women were treated. My Whole life I have heard about African American slaves and how they were treated with no rights but never have I been told that women were basically treated the same . This book has great detail and reads out so well there were parts of it that made me very angry. This book is a must read I was made to get it for a history class and I am very glad I had to read it . The book has change my perspective of women and rights and opened my eyes to so many possibilities and changes women have made in this world. This book should be a part of middle and high school teaching.
