From Publishers Weekly
Forty-two years after I Love Lucy premiered on TV, this first dual biography of Lucille Ball (1911-1989) and Desi Arnaz (1917-1986) painstakingly details their business and personal dealings. The famed redhead and her Cuban husband, who met as young Hollywood contract players, pioneered TV situation comedy by starring in their own series and founding Desilu Productions, which was responsible for such other hit shows as Star Trek and Mission Impossible . Colleagues, friends and relatives--particularly daughter Lucie Arnaz--contribute to this telling of the team's successes and failures. Lucille's obsessive involvements with her co-stars and children and Desi's alcoholism and womanizing come to stand out in sharp contrast to the zany TV antics of Lucy and Desi, who remain beloved by the viewing public worldwide. The book will disappoint fans, however, due to excessive attention paid to the finances of Desilu Productions. Sanders is the author of Rainbow's End: The Judy Garland Show ; Gilbert is an editor for Daily Variety. Photos not seen by PW.

From Library Journal
Claiming to be the first dual biography "supported by family members and close friends," Desilu is actually something more. Here are the familiar stories of the stormy Ball-Arnaz marriage, their phenomenal success with I Love Lucy , and their inevitable parting. The real value of this book lies in its detailed charting of the fortunes of the couple's TV studio, which launched The Untouchables , Mission Impossible , and Star Trek , as well as a host of forgettable programs. The authors' something-for-everyone approach--interweaving dishy tales of Lucy's insecurity-fed tantrums and Desi's drinking with yearly accounting of the studio's profits--doesn't always work, but this is still a valuable book about the inner workings of television. Recommended for most public libraries. Previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ 10/1/92.

Sympathetic But Unsparing
By Jebo from Cali
My family and I recently watched a "Best of I Love Lucy" DVD. We all loved it (and her) with my kids laughing uproariously at the candy shop, the stomping grapes, or the Harpo Marx pantomime. I got this book as a way to connect more with Desi and Lucy. The book is well researched and comes recommended by their daughter Lucie. It is exhaustive in chronicling their lives before and after I Love Lucy. What stood out to me were three things. First was the talent and brilliance of Desi, undermined by a serious drinking problem that got worse over the years. The second was the severity and hard nosed approach that Lucy took, spurred on by insecurity in herself. Finally, there love was incredibly strong and touching, long after their marriage had ended the love clearly endured. I recommend this book if You love Lucy and want to learn more.

A REALLY GOOD BOOK
By Karen Wiltshire
Having grown up with "I Love Lucy" from the time it came out until now, I thought this book was so interesting and gave us an insight into the true lives of two people showing us the good, the bad and the ugly. I found it thoroughly enchanting that they remained in love until the very end of their lives even though they were with other spouses. What a great comedy team they were and each had their own unique talents. I think this is why people today still love the "I Love Lucy" comedies. Thank goodness they were preserved so generations can see one of television's greatest series. The talent of each of the stars along with Vivian Vance and William Frawley were one of the finest ensembles in television history! Really worth a read if you are a "Lucy" fan. Having met Mr. Arnaz when I was 17, I found him to be a very charming person even though he could be a real cad.

For every I LOVE LUCY fan!
By Amazon Customer
Anyone who loves the Ricardos will love this book! It's sad Lucy and Desi couldn't make it work in their personal lives; and it's sad about the deep animosity between "Fred and Ethel"! But you could NEVER tell it by watching this beloved piece of American History! I watch their shows every, single day! So does my daughter and 10 year old grandson (who absolutely LOVES the show!) Now... THAT speaks generational volumes!
