An excellent beginner book

This is a beautifully crafted introduction to OCaml. It is true to its title, in that it makes no assumptions about background, and as such is suitable for any intelligent undergraduate. Despite this, the book is concise and to the point, explaining the basic underpinnings of OCaml (and of functional programming) in an accessible way. The book is also thoughtfully typeset and laid out, with exercises and summaries interspersed, and layout used to illustrate complex ideas like type inference and evaluation of recursive functions.

All told, a wonderful book that is especially well suited to someone new to programming.

Complete but simple to read. Very usefull book for early beginners of this language. It is perhaps the missing book on OCaml. OCaml OOP not enough covered.

Easy Introduction

A very good and simple introduction to the basics of this amazing language. Short, easily digested chapters introduce each new concept. More advanced concepts are only briefly covered such as modules. Functors and OO are not covered. Having said that, this must be the easiest way of getting into the language or getting an introduction to the language. This book will prepare you to tackle the more comprehensive treatises such as "Real World OCaml: Functional programming for the masses" (also highly recommended) with ease.

Master Autodesk Inventor 2013 - A good book

I had never opened the Autodesk Inventor application before purchasing Master Autodesk Inventor 2013. I needed a book that would work well for a complete beginner. This book is so far working great for me. I think if I had had some previous experience I would have been able to hop around the chapters but for me I started at the beginning of the book and am slowly moving forward.

I believe this is a good book for a beginner who wants to know everything about Inventor and has the patience to slowly work through the chapters. If you want to jump right into cool looking projects then this might not be the book for you.

I'm giving it 4 stars because I find it difficult to find info on certain subjects when I do want to jump forward.

This book will create memories

This is not just a book, it really creates a unique reading experience for kids. This book is so different from anything else out there, I absolutely love it. We love reading it with the flashlight while we hang out in my sons tent! I have no doubt this will be one of those books my son always remembers his whole life, because it really just creates such a memorable and fun experience for little minds.

About the Author

Alexander Bird is�a Professor of Philosophy and�Faculty of Arts Research Director at Bristol University, UK. His previous publications include Nature's Metaphysics: Laws and Properties (2007), and Philosophy of Science (Routledge/McGill-Queens University Press, 1998).

James Ladyman is a Professor of Philosophy at Bristol University UK. He is the author (with Ross, Collier, and Spurrett) of Every Thing Must Go: Metaphysics Naturalised (2007), and of the CHOICE awarding-winning book Understanding Philosophy of Science, also published by Routledge (2001).

So this isn't the first phil science anthology I've owned. It's got all the classic papers that every phil science book's just gotta have. You can tic off the list names like Duhem, Laudan, Salmon, van Fraassen, Kuhn, Popper, and so on. All in order, everything's cool in the core content department.
That said, this is the worst philosophy anthology I own. That's not to say it's a terrible book (see the above paragraph). But I just don't like it. I'll give you some examples of what makes it substandard. First, the section introductions aren't always illuminating about the section's theme. But that's a small complaint.
A larger complaint I have is that there are some sections that just don't belong in this book. Take the section on science, race, and gender. I understand why it's there. It's there to appease social scientists who enroll in a phil science class. Cool. But the readings in it are annoying. Some ramble around a point without saying a whole lot (I'm looking at you Lucius T. Outlaw. You're awesome name and stellar reputation don't make up for this annoying paper where you don't really say anything). Some are filled with almost incomprehensible jargon pulled from the dregs of sociology departments. But every one I read had the same basic theme: Hey look, science doesn't have anything positive to say about racial/gender discrimination, so we should not be racists and/or sexist. Honestly, if you need to be told something that from a book with some of the great works of the philosophy of science in it, then something went seriously wrong with your upbringing and you clearly never met a person who wasn't as lily-white and male as you. For a book published in 2013, you'd think they wouldn't have to resort to such things. I mean, sure racism is alive and well. So is sexism. But scientific support for either was an endangered species before I was born and any scientist today who says their research supports significant racial stigmatization is going to be looked at with the same mix of mild curiosity and pity that we'd look at an elderly chimp that just discovered masturbation. Granted, it isn't too hard to find someone trying to support some sexist agenda with science, but those people are horrible and should be marginalized. I don't need Sally Haslanger (who is awesome!) to tell me that. I also learned way too much about some of the more horrific mating practices in the natural kingdom. Thanks Helena Cronin!
So far, these examples just look like me complaining about things I'm either a) snobbishly unimpressed by, or b) generally uninterested in. Fair enough. How about this: Bird and Ladyman are terrible editors. I'll give you a concrete example. Say you're curious about the Inference to the Best Explanation. That's a neat idea in phil science, right? Well, let's say you want to see which selections in this book talk about it. So you go to the index and look it up. Hmm...only two entries. What? One of them is a section intro by Bird and Ladyman themselves. Okay, what about the other page...Oh, it's a reference to IBE in the last paragraph of a paper by Peter Lipton that doesn't even define the term. Well, you think to yourself, surely there must be more on IBE in a phil science anthology of this size and breadth. And you'd be right. For instance, if you look at the classic and much-utilized-in-these-types-of collections excerpt from van Fraassen's The Scientific Image, you'll find there's an entire section on IBE. Is it mentioned in the index? No. Why? Because, that's why.
If you're interested in a phil science anthology, go with Curd and Cover. At least those guys can properly index their freakin book.

About the Author
Charles Watson is a specialist in the area of brain and spinal cord mapping. He graduated in medicine from the University of Sydney in 1967 and was awarded a research doctorate (MD) by the University of New South Wales in 1974. He lectured in anatomy at the UNSW from 1970 to 1982, when he took up a career in public health in the Health Department of Western Australia, being appointed Chief Health Officer for WA in 1993.

He returned to university life in 1994, holding the position of Dean of Health Sciences at the University of Wollongong and Curtin University until 2006. Since then he has held research positions at Curtin and at Neuroscience Research Australia. Since 2006 he has published 11 books and over 40 journal articles.

Watson was made a member of the Order of Australia (AM) in 2004. He earned a DSc (by thesis) from the University of Sydney in 2012.

In his spare time he swims in the ocean, and he is an enthusiastic but mediocre player of the baritone saxophone. His musical favourites are Frank Zappa, Brian Eno, and Beethoven.

Professor George Paxinos, AO (BA, MA, PhD, DSc) completed his BA at The University of California at Berkeley, his PhD at McGill University, and spent a postdoctoral year at Yale University. He is the author of almost 50 books on the structure of the brain of humans and experimental animals, including The Rat Brain in Stereotaxic Coordinates, now in its 7th Edition, which is ranked by Thomson ISI as one of the 50 most cited items in the Web of Science. Dr. Paxinos paved the way for future neuroscience research by being the first to produce a three-dimensional (stereotaxic) framework for placement of electrodes and injections in the brain of experimental animals, which is now used as an international standard. He was a member of the first International Consortium for Brain Mapping, a UCLA based consortium that received the top ranking and was funded by the NIMH led Human Brain Project. Dr. Paxinos has been honored with more than nine distinguished awards throughout his years of research, including: The Warner Brown Memorial Prize (University of California at Berkeley, 1968), The Walter Burfitt Prize (1992), The Award for Excellence in Publishing in Medical Science (Assoc Amer Publishers, 1999), The Ramaciotti Medal for Excellence in Biomedical Research (2001), The Alexander von Humbolt Foundation Prize (Germany 2004), and more.

This Book is a Lifesaver!

Chalfin's user-friendly guide to selling your IT business is a must for anyone in the complicated and often stressful position of putting his or her firm on the market. From illuminating the possible motives of the seller to providing a concise guide to marketing your business, this book gives sound and concrete advice.

You will not faced with an abstract, inaccessible microeconomics text, as some how-to works by business school faculty can turn out to be. Rather, you will finish this digestible book a more savvy and resourceful seller. To start with, you will be better equipped to evaluate whether it is the right time to sell your IT business in the first place. Chalfin also provides useful alternatives to an outright sale, such as partially selling to a third party, hiring a competent management team to take over operations, selling the firm to key employees, and liquidating the company. You will be better able to market your business, make changes to increase its appeal to buyers, and negotiate a satisfying sale. Chalfin illustrates how to gauge the seriousness and flexibility of an offer, an insight that can make your sale smoother and more predictable.

There is no reason to spend years building up your IT business only to lose out in the end because you lacked the necessary tools to bring about a successful sale. Without Selling Your IT Business: Valuation, Finding the Right Buyer, and Negotiating the Deal, my own transaction would have been a nightmare. Fortunately, I found this practical and accessible guide. Chalfin's experience, both as a Lecturer in Management at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, and his professional work as President of a New Jersey-based firm that, among other things, provides consulting services to IT companies, informs his opinions every step of the way.

An Unbelievable Resource for IT Entrepreneurs

I have had the pleasure of getting to know Bob and had him as a professor at Wharton. He applies the same level of energy and enthusiasm that he brings in the classroom to this very practical book. I have had many people come up to me and tell me if they had only known Bob or read his book before they sold their business, they would be in a much different and better situation. His knowledge of the topic is unbelievable and he brings so much practical experience to his latest book. I hope everyone gets to experience the wonderful work Bob does by reading his new book.

I know I will share this book with many of my clients who are contemplating selling their businesses. Bob's work makes all of us more educated and provides yet another resource that will add value to our clients.

About the Author
Dr. Robert J. Manley graduated from Iona College with a BA in Spanish Language Arts and minors in Philosophy and Education. He completed his MA degree in the Humanities at Hofstra University and his Professional Diploma and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Educational Administration at St. John's University. He taught Spanish language skills and served as an instructor in a New York State Model Humanities program at West Babylon High School. For 21 years, he served in a variety of administrative positions including Assistant Principal at Babylon Jr./Sr. High School, Principal in Plainedge School Distrct, and Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction and Superintendent of Schools in West Babylon, New York. He served as President of the Board of Directors for the Suffolk County Library System and Suffolk County Organization to Promote Education. Currently, he is Professor of Educational Administration and Leadership in the Doctoral Program at Dowling College, New York.

In the last six years, he has presented peer-reviewed papers at the Sixth Annual Conference on Social Issues at Oxford University, England; the World Association for Case Research and Application in Mannheim, Germany, and Lucerne, Switzerland; and the Eastern Educational Research Association in Hilton Head, South Carolina, and Clearwater, Florida. In addition, he presented workshops on School Board Governance practices at the New York State School Boards Annual Convention and at the National School Boards Conference. On January 8, 2009, he presented "Systems That Work for Students in Higher Education" as Keynote Speaker at the International Symposium for Quality in Higher Education at Shri M.D., Shah Mahila College of Arts and Commerce, Mumbai, India. In January 2011, his paper titled "Indian, Mexican, and USA Management Students Interpret Moral Leadership for a Global Economy" was awarded Best Paper for Management at the International Business and Economy Conference at Universidad Panamericana, Guadalajara, Mexico. He is the coauthor with Richard Hawkins of a book on school reform titled Designing School Systems for All Students: A Toolbox to Fix America's Schools.

Dr. Richard J. Hawkins graduated from Hofstra University with his BS in Music Education. He completed his MS in Education and Professional Diploma in Education Leadership at Long Island University. Rich received his doctorate in Educational Administration at Dowling College. He began his teaching career in the William Floyd School District as an instrumental music teacher and later became District Coordinator of Music and Art. After his department was recognized as the Outstanding Music Program in the country by the Music Educators National Conference, Rich moved to the�district office as the Assistant Superintendent for Elementary Education and Personnel. Schools under his supervision received designation as New York State (NYS) Schools of Excellence and U.S. DOE Blue Ribbon Schools. Rich served as Superintendent of the William Floyd School District for almost 12 years. He has served as President of the Suffolk County School Superintendents Association (SCSSA) and held various roles with the New York State Council of School Superintendents (NYSCOSS). Currently, he is Director of Contract Services for the College of St. Rose, Albany, NY.

Since retiring from William Floyd, Rich served as an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Advanced Certificate and EdD programs in Educational Leadership at Dowlling College. He also is an instructor in the Educational Leadership program at the College of St. Rose in Albany, NY. In addition, Rich taught full time at the College of St. Elizabeth as Assistant Professor in their EdD and Master's programs. In 2006, Rich formed Hawkins and Associates: Organizational Learning Consultants to help leaders and their organizations reach their goals and aspirations. Over the last nine years, he has peer-reviewed papers presented at the World Association for Case Research and Application in Lucerne, Switzerland, and Mannheim, Germany; the Eastern Educational Research Association in Hilton Head, South Carolina; and in the Long Island Education Review. Rich has made numerous presentations to the NYS School Boards Association, NYSCOSS, and SCSSA. He has presented at Hofstra University's Social Emotional Literacy Conference and Dowling College's Annual Practical Research Symposium. He was also a Keynote Presenter at the U.S. DOE Safe School/Healthier Students Conference, Tysons Corner, VA.

He is the coauthor with Robert Manley of a book on school reform titled Designing School Systems for All Students: A Toolbox to Fix America's Schools.

This has got to be the worst book on the Common Core to date

This has got to be the worst book on the Common Core to date. Do not be fooled by the content of the pages herein. Given the strengths and weaknesses of the CCSS, the authors have little, if any, experience in the program's development and virtually no experience in terms of its implementation. Analysis of the Common Core, specifically as to its implementation and roll-out, is nowhere to be found between the book's covers. In fact, the authors lionize the Common Core with little evidence to justify their praise. Moreover, the authors fail to discuss anything having to do with Common Core content. Their mention of language arts is threadbare (not to mention laughable, given the lack of support). Discussion of mathematics as it relates to the Common Core doesn't even exist. Do not purchase this book. You will be wasting your hard-earned money.

Strongly Recommend!

Having used this book as an adjunct professor at the graduate level, I feel it thoroughly prepared me to instruct future leaders in understanding the common core learning standards. The book was also a very useful tool in my work as a High School Principal, Parent, and current Board of Education Member!
