Review
"Making the Common Core Standards Work provides a detailed approach to systems thinking and how to manage a real-life paradigm shift. Having that coached in the context of core standards is somewhat unique and provides an opportunity for enhanced dialogue across grade levels and disciplines in areas of the country where those discussions may not have occurred on their own." (William Richard Hall, Jr., Principal 2012-08-28)
"Making the Common Core Standards Work looks at the implementation of CCSS within the context of all of the components that face public schools, and, in doing so, put the CCSS in a proper perspective. This is a book that could actually help make a difference in the improvement of instruction in the public schools." (Martin J. Hudacs, Superintendent 2012-08-28)
"The book is easy to read and offers concrete suggestions without establishing walls that prohibit creative practices. Making the Common Core Standards Work pushes educators to plan, reflect, and revise cooperatively to move from a traditional scripted approach of teaching to one that promotes critical thinking and analysis for all students." (Charlotte R. Bihm, Instructional Specialist 2012-08-28)
"As a busy superintendent who is very careful with her time, I’ve been searching for what seemed to be an impossible … one resource that is full of good, solid research and practical information on CCSS. Manley and Hawkins are practitioner scholars…and they created, in Making the Common Core Standards Work, exactly what I need to intelligently and confidently move my district forward …thanks!" (Roberta Gerold, Superintendent, Middle Country Schools, Centereach, NY 2012-09-19)

This has got to be the worst book on the Common Core to date
By guest
This has got to be the worst book on the Common Core to date. Do not be fooled by the content of the pages herein. Given the strengths and weaknesses of the CCSS, the authors have little, if any, experience in the program's development and virtually no experience in terms of its implementation. Analysis of the Common Core, specifically as to its implementation and roll-out, is nowhere to be found between the book's covers. In fact, the authors lionize the Common Core with little evidence to justify their praise. Moreover, the authors fail to discuss anything having to do with Common Core content. Their mention of language arts is threadbare (not to mention laughable, given the lack of support). Discussion of mathematics as it relates to the Common Core doesn't even exist. Do not purchase this book. You will be wasting your hard-earned money.

Strongly Recommend!
By donna tobin
Having used this book as an adjunct professor at the graduate level, I feel it thoroughly prepared me to instruct future leaders in understanding the common core learning standards. The book was also a very useful tool in my work as a High School Principal, Parent, and current Board of Education Member! It is without hesitation that I recommend this book for any parent or professional in need of direction with the standards movement! Paul R.Tobin
